What makes breaststroke technique different from every other stroke

Breaststroke breaks its own rules compared to the rest of competitive swimming. U.S. Masters Swimming's breaststroke guide points out that it's the only stroke where you can't recover your arms over the surface of the water. It’s also the only one with a genuine pause built into every cycle of pull → kick → glide → repeat.

That pause is a feature, not a flaw. It's also why breaststroke rewards patience over raw aggression in a way freestyle and backstroke don't. Rush the glide and you lose the free speed it's supposed to give you.

The whip kick: where most of your propulsion actually comes from

Your kick, not your pull, does the heavier lifting in breaststroke. U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) is specific about the mechanics:

Your feet turn outward and sweep backward with real rotation built in. It’s a completely different pattern from the up-and-down flutter or dolphin kicks used in the other three strokes.

Pull while your legs are still recovering from the last kick, or kick before your arms finish their pull, and you're applying the brakes and the gas at the same time.

Stroke rate and glide length vary a lot between good breaststrokers. Some swim with long strokes and a big glide at a low stroke rate. Others swim with almost no glide and a much higher turnover. Neither approach is universally faster.
