For me, the first two weeks should establish an initial event profile. That profile will still develop from several observations like acceleration, speed maintenance, coordination, response to technical instruction, and the athlete's willingness to remain engaged when the event becomes difficult.

A single time trial can't provide that picture, and neither can height or a standing vertical considered alone. Body dimensions may suggest where to begin, but they have to be interpreted alongside movement quality, training response, and biological maturation.

What the Warm-Up Reveals

Testing is useful, particularly in a large program, but the warm-up often provides the first reliable view of an athlete's movement.

Observe how the athlete skips, bounds, changes direction, and progresses through a build-up. Some produce force quickly, with short ground contact and little unnecessary movement. Others take longer to reach speed but remain relaxed once they get there. Similar times can therefore come from very different biomechanical profiles.

The response to technical instruction adds another part of the assessment. Ask a runner to release tension through the shoulders or cue a jumper to maintain hip height into takeoff. A visible change on the next attempt indicates body awareness and an ability to organize a new movement pattern.

Body build may suggest where the assessment should begin. In a study of 68 male college runners (Stachoń et al., 2023), sprinters were heavier and had larger limb measurements than middle- and long-distance runners, while body height did not differ significantly. However, these findings describe trained college athletes and can't determine the event profile of an individual high school athlete, in part because that athlete's body is still changing in ways the college sample already had settled.

Biological maturation must also be considered. A 6-foot-3 sophomore who recently grew several inches may test poorly while adapting to the new limb length. Six months later, improved neuromuscular coordination may produce a very different result. One testing session should not determine four years of event placement.

Sprints: Acceleration, Maximum Velocity, and Speed Endurance

"Fast" is too broad for event placement. A 20-meter acceleration measures how quickly an athlete builds velocity from a stationary start. A flying 10 examines maximum velocity once the athlete is upright. Together, the tests distinguish acceleration from top-end speed.

An athlete may rank near the top of the team over 20 meters and fall much lower in the fly. The result shows acceleration ability. The discrepancy may come from posture, relaxation, or coordination, all of which can improve through sprint training.

The event options begin to narrow once those qualities are considered alongside speed maintenance. The 100 and 200 generally favor athletes who accelerate efficiently, reach high velocity, and preserve mechanical organization. The 400 places greater demand on speed endurance and technical control under fatigue. In the final 100 meters of a hard repetition, some athletes tighten and lose hip position, while others maintain enough rhythm to continue applying force.

That distinction matters because the 400 should not become a holding event for every average 100-meter runner. A modest short-sprint result may reflect limited technical development, while another athlete's strength may be the ability to sustain velocity as fatigue alters the mechanics.

Hurdles: The Athlete Has to Want the Event

The first quality I would look for in a potential hurdler is willingness. Height may make three-stepping easier in the boys' 110-meter hurdles, but it offers little protection from the frustration of learning the event, which shows up early and often. Beginning hurdlers hit barriers, lose rhythm, and continue with drills after the flat sprinters have finished.

Speed, mobility, quickness, and aggression remain important. The larger question is whether the athlete will keep attacking the barrier while learning to control those qualities within the hurdle rhythm.

An early assessment is to lower the hurdle and ask the athlete to run through it. Some maintain forward velocity into clearance. Others shorten the approach, sit back, and project upward. The second response may improve with coaching, though it shows how fear alters posture and takeoff mechanics.

A shorter athlete who asks to hurdle deserves an opportunity. A tall, fast athlete with no interest will be difficult to develop. The coach can explain the potential and offer a trial period, but the athlete still has to accept the work.

Race entry should come later. Reduced spacing and lower heights allow beginners to establish rhythm and repeat clearance mechanics before full race velocity.

Jumps: Test Speed, Then Watch the Takeoff

One of the more frustrating errors in event placement is discovering a jumper during the athlete's senior year.

The athlete may spend three seasons as an average sprinter, enter the long jump because the team needs another competitor, and immediately look comfortable on the runway. By that point, the lost development time is difficult to recover, which is why jump identification should begin early.

Approach velocity is central to all three jumping events. The athlete must carry sufficient speed into takeoff and organize the movement within a very short time frame. A fly sprint provides an indication of maximum velocity, while bounds or rebound jumps show how force is produced through repeated contacts. A short-approach jump adds another important observation: whether the athlete can convert horizontal velocity into vertical displacement.

These measures are most informative when considered together. An athlete may appear ordinary in a countermovement jump and perform much better from a one-leg approach. Another may accelerate well but lose coordination near maximum velocity. If that same athlete bounds with rhythm and responds quickly to takeoff cues, the underlying jump potential is still worth developing.

Throwers generally carry more body mass and greater absolute strength than runners and jumpers. Throwing distance, however, depends heavily on movement sequencing. Force begins at the ground and continues through the lower body, hips, shoulders, and release.

This is where body size can become misleading. A strong athlete who attempts to arm the implement will usually lose distance and place unnecessary stress on the shoulder or elbow. A smaller athlete with better separation and lower-to-upper-body sequencing may progress more quickly.

Athletes with backgrounds in wrestling or baseball, among others, may already possess part of that movement pattern. A wrestler may apply force through the ground and hips effectively, while a baseball player may create separation naturally. The relevant question is whether those qualities transfer and remain repeatable within the event.

Early instruction should be limited to one clear, reproducible cue so the coach can evaluate the athlete's response without obscuring the movement.

Safety remains the first requirement. Every athlete must understand when the ring is live, where teammates should stand, and when implements may be retrieved.

Middle-Distance and Distance: Do Not Present Them as Punishment

This is where good athletes are often lost.

A freshman may spend several weeks in the sprint group, struggle in the 100 and 200, and then be told to move up in distance. The coach may be responding to clear endurance qualities, while the athlete hears only that they were not fast enough.

Once that interpretation takes hold, the 800 or 1600 begins to feel like a demotion. Removing the athlete from all speed work reinforces the same message and makes the reassignment appear permanent.

The alternative is to let evidence come before a new event label. An early 4x400, followed later by a 4x800 when the competition schedule and training load allow, gives the athlete a lower-pressure introduction to longer racing. The relay setting also provides an objective split that can guide the discussion afterward.

One freshman entered the 4x800 only because an injury left the team short. She had been among the weaker sprinters, yet produced the fastest split of the replacements and helped the relay finish inside the top 10 at the state meet.

That performance revealed more than a preseason discussion about body type could have shown. It also exposed the more difficult part of event placement. After a year in the sprint group, she still identified as a sprinter. Her competitive results had changed before her perception of herself did.

A poor 400 may redirect the athlete elsewhere. Clean hurdle rhythm, an unexpected relay split, or rapid improvement after a technical correction may reveal a stronger option. The important point is whether the same qualities continue to appear in training and competition.

Athlete interest also has a legitimate place in the decision. Forcing a teenager into an event they resent often leads to poor engagement and a shortened season. Allowing every athlete to remain with friends in the sprint group creates a different problem. Effective guidance has to be firm and supported by evidence the athlete can understand.
